A Stellar asset is identified by two things: its short code and the account that issued it. Anyone can issue a code that looks like another, so the code alone proves nothing.
Look up the issuer account on a public explorer. Note its age, activity and whether it matches the issuer the project publishes.
Search the same code across issuers. Several different assets sharing one code is common, and it is the main way people confuse one asset for another.
Real projects publish a stellar.toml on their own domain. Remember it proves control of that domain only, not that the project is sound.
